The international, multi-centre HORTIS (Hyperbaric Oxygen Radiation Tissue Injury Study) study currently in progress is showing amazing repair results with 20 - 30 HBO treatments.
The study has 8 components; 7 involve evaluation of established radionecrosis at varying anatomic sites. The 8th will investigate the potential of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to prophylax against late radiation tissue injury. Further study will be required to establish the precise rates of pressure and treatment time to obtain the best results according to each patient's condition.
This is a major avenue of research which the Trust wishes to put in place as soon as the main HORTIS trials are concluded.
